Yankees clinch third straight postseason appearance with Blue Jays loss
NEW YORK (WABC) -- For the third consecutive season, and ninth time in the past 10 seasons, the New York Yankees are headed to the playoffs.
The Yankees didn't even need a win to clinch a playoff berth on Monday night thanks to a 6-5 loss by the Toronto Blue Jays against the Detroit Tigers.
While New York can rest easy about playing baseball in October this season, there is still much left to be determined about their path to a potential 28th World Series title.
The Yankees are still 3.5 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the American League East, and whether or not New York can overtake them will determine if they have to play a best-of-three game wild card series.
If they can't win the division, the Yankees wild card playoff matchup could look a lot like last season's when they played the Boston Red Sox, and won in three games.
Currently, the Yankees are ahead of the Red Sox in the standings, meaning if the season ended Monday, they would play each other again in the American League wild card series.
