Officials in Newark release crime data that shows overall decline for 2025
NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Officials in Newark released its crime data for 2025 which paints a picture of a city that's making strides to reduce violence.
There were 31 homicides this year -- the lowest level since 1953.
Robberies fell by 38%, aggravated assaults were down 14% and crime overall dipped by 19%.
At least 560 illegal guns were also taken off the streets and non-fatal shootings also declined.
Mayor Ras Baraka said this is a far cry from the city he grew up in. He said back then, crime in Newark was worse.
"And you pray for a better year than the year before, but what we've witnessed here in the city by God's grace, and thank God definitely, and all the work you guys are doing, is a consistent and constant reduction in violence and crime year after year," Baraka said.
This year, the federal court also terminated Newark's Consent Decree after the city successfully improved policing, training, community engagement and oversight.
