NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- One man has died and another was injured during a police shooting in Newark on Monday.
It all happened just after 1:30 p.m. outside a corner liquor store near Ross Street and Evergreen Avenue.
Officials say Newark police officers encountered several civilians at the location, and one of the officers fired his weapon, striking two civilians.
They were taken to University Hospital, where one of them, an unidentified man, was pronounced dead. The other injured man is receiving treatment and is expected to survive.
According to residents, one man was sitting in a car when undercover officers approached and that is when shots were fired.
Witnesses say they had to avoid being struck by gunfire but no one knows what caused the incident to escalate to a shootout.
No police officers were hit by gunfire. One officer was taken to the hospital for evaluation and was released.
The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting are not yet clear.
Mayor Ras Baraka released a statement, calling the incident a "heartbreaking tragedy for everyone involved when a police officer feels the need to draw weapon-and so much more so when they are compelled to fire."
Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. said in statement that "a fatal shooting involving a civilian and a member of law enforcement is especially difficult and complex due to the impact it has on our community," and said it welcomes the investigation from the New Jersey Attorney General's Office.
