Passengers escorted off disabled NJ Transit train after Amtrak power issue
MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- NJ Transit passengers were escorted off a disabled train early Saturday morning after an Amtrak power issue caused the train to lose power.
Many of the passengers were fans returning from the Chris Brown and Usher concert at MetLife Stadium.
Passengers said they smelled something burning before the packed train came to a stop and lost power.
"It was terrible, people were flipping out a little bit, it was very hot," one passenger said. "By the time the cops came we were already exhausted and hot. They did open the doors but this was just before the train moved, see I have my little towel? So it was very hot in there."
NJ Transit says an Amtrak power issue disabled the train. Amtrak controls the Northeast Corridor line.
According to officials, the train was stopped in a lit area outside of the Hudson River tunnel and away from the platform when it lost power. The outage lasted approximately one hour.
Passengers were eventually escorted off the train. It remains unclear how many people were on board.
The FDNY says it received a call about a disabled Jersey-bound train at Penn Station at 1:46 a.m.
A total of 21 units and 79 fire and EMS personnel responded.
No injuries were reported, according to the FDNY, and the incident was brought under control at 3:04 a.m.
