NEW YORK (WABC) -- New York Congressman Ritchie Torres is railing against claims that Democrats are responsible for the looming loss of federal food benefits.
In his Bronx district on Wednesday morning, Torres demanded President Trump come to the table and negotiate a compromise to sustain the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
The Democratic congressman says without those benefits, too many of his constituents will go without food, especially as prices tick higher everyday.
"In NY-15, there are 272,000 Bronxites who depend on SNAP for their survival. The Bronx is not Donald Trump's bargaining chip," Torres said during the press conference.
For Bronx resident Cathy McFadden, that struggle is real.
The wheelchair-bound 58-year-old has multiple sclerosis and cares for two teenage granddaughters, who live with her in a sixth floor apartment at the Pelham Parkway Houses in the Bronx. SNAP benefits put food on the table for McFadden.
"If I don't get SNAP benefits, I start to go under. I am on a fixed income, only relying on my Social Security disability check which, you know, is made for me, but I am stretching it between the three of us," McFadden said.
For McFadden, and millions of people throughout the Tri-State area and across the country, the benefits of SNAP will run dry at the end of the month because of the government shutdown.
Torres called on the Trump administration to use contingency funds to finance the program.
"SNAP is not a ransom note, it is an entitlement. 42 million Americans have a right to put food on their table, to feed their families," Torres said.
The New York representative held his Wednesday morning news conference outside of a church that runs a weekly food pantry.
Rev. John Udo Okon has already seen a substantial increase in the number of people lining up for handouts of free food. The Reverend is aware that his dwindling supply will not keep up with the growing demand.
"People show up as early as 3 a.m. to line up for food that will be distributed by 11 a.m.," Okon said.
Meanwhile, McFadden says the positive impacts of SNAP benefits are significant for her family.
"SNAP benefits provide security in my hope. SNAP benefits provide great meals. SNAP benefits keep these kids doing well in school," McFadden said.
