NEW YORK (WABC) -- Landlords can implement a one-time rent increase on empty units, even if a rent freeze is approved later this month, Mayor Zohran Mamdani is announcing Tuesday.
The mayor is making the announcement Tuesday at Powerhouse Arts in Gowanus, Brooklyn, where he will also tour housing.
The percentage increases will be determined on a case-by-case basis, but could amount to hundreds of dollars a month in some cases.
The plan is part of a series of lifelines being offered to struggling landlords of affordable housing, including : making it easier to finance property improvements, securing tax exemptions, clearing housing-code violations and a $5 million loan program for landlords to help pay tenants' overdue rent and avoid evictions.
As the Rent Guidelines Board votes in June to set the new limit, possibly 0%, for how much landlords of rent-stabilized units increase rent, the administration has been searching for ways to offer landlords relief, while keeping housing affordable.
