New poll shows Mamdani with commanding lead as candidates ramp up attacks on each other

NEW YORK (WABC) -- In the race for New York City mayor, a new poll from Siena College shows Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani is holding onto a commanding lead as the attacks between the candidates ramp up.

The poll says he is up 19 points over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and 37 points ahead of the incumbent Mayor Eric Adams who is in fourth place behind Republican Curtis Sliwa.

The latest poll shows the Democratic nominee with 44% of voters, followed by former governor Andrew Cuomo with 25%, Republican Curtis Sliwa with 12% and Mayor Adams polling at just 7%.

As with other polls with similar results, the mayor shrugged it off on Tuesday.

"I have to get out there and sell: 'This is what I'm going to do for you in the next four years,' but the people of this city are going to make that determination," Adams said. "They're going to hear me and they're going to say, 'Do we want to continue after we heard you, Eric?' And then make a decision and in the end, it's all cool."

The good news for Adams and the other challengers is that the poll is relatively weak.

Just 317 registered city voters were surveyed with a margin of error of almost 7% and included the disclaimer, "Some results should be taken as anecdotal."

"This is not a good day for Adams certainly, it's not a good day for Curtis Sliwa who should be better doing better considering he's the Republican candidate," said Political consultant Hank Sheinkopf. "It's an OK day for Andrew Cuomo in those numbers. And it's not a great day for Mamdani. Why? Because the Democratic candidate should be doing much, much better on any kind of poll."

The attacks are ramping up between the candidates as Mamdani released a campaign video going after Cuomo.

And on Tuesday, Cuomo continued to hammer away at Mandani's rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria-which he now calls "Rentgate."

Mamdani is accusing the former governor of ignoring the real issue in the race.

"Andrew Cuomo has spent more time talking about my apartment than asking why so many New Yorkers are being forced out of their," Mamdani said. "He has spent more time criticizing me than he has in criticizing the legislation that Donald Trump has passed, he has spent more time on these things because he only cares for his own ambition."

Mamdani and Cuomo are also going at it on social media.

Cuomo wants Mamdani to release his apartment lease while Mamdani wants Cuomo to release his client list from when he was a consultant in private practice.
