Times Square Ball will drop 8 times for every US time zone in celebration of America 250

TIMES SQUARE, Manhattan (WABC) -- New York City will usher in America's 250th birthday this summer in a big way.

For the first time ever, the Times Square ball will drop not once, but eight times, marking midnight in every U.S. time zone.

New information was released this week by America250 and One Times Square about the nearly 24-hour celebration planned for the Fourth of July weekend.

The first drop, at 10 a.m. eastern time on July 3, will be for the time zone covering Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

It will build up to a signature New York City countdown at 11:59 p.m. before continuing west through the various time zones.

The final drop will be at 7 a.m. the next day for American Samoa.

Each time zone will get its own special ball design.

"This is more than a countdown. It's a moment that brings the entire country together, one time zone at a time," said Rosie Rios, Chair of America250. "From Guam to New York to Alaska to American Samoa we are creating a shared experience where every American can see themselves in this celebration and be part of something bigger than any one city or moment."

There will also be special moments and musical performances across Puerto Rico and the continental U.S. building up to the New York City countdown.
