NYPD officer dies in Dominican Republic after suffering complications after surgery
NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- The NYPD is in mourning after the death of an off-duty officer.
Rebecca De Paula worked out of the 46th Precinct in the Fordham section of the Bronx.
A news outlet in the Dominican Republic says she died there, from complications from breast implant removal surgery.
The married mother of three joined the force in January of 2025.
In March, De Paula was named her precinct's "Officer of the Month."
The police union president is asking New Yorkers to keep her family in their prayers.
"Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our sister P.O. Rebecca De Paula, who passed away while off duty after only 18 months on the job. We ask all New Yorkers to keep her family, friends and coworkers in your prayers during this difficult time," said Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry.
De Paula's NYPD training instructor says she was a beautiful soul with a bright future.
