CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) -- An NYPD officer was shot early Sunday morning near the intersection of Nostrand Avenue and St. Johns Place in Brooklyn, according to police.
The shooting occurred at approximately 4:14 a.m. The officer was struck in his bulletproof vest and transported to Kings County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities say he is expected to be okay.
Police have not yet released additional information about the circumstances leading up to the shooting. A suspect is in custody, and charges are pending.
Investigators also recovered a gun at the scene.
Nearby business owners described hearing the gunfire. Ali Alawdi and his uncle, Amar Kissim, who own the Urban Market bodega at the corner, said they were open when the shots were fired.
The two men told Eyewitness News reporter Chantee Lans that they heard six gunshots and saw a person run from the scene. After the shooting, they closed the store.
The bodega is typically open 24 hours on weekends.
Police are expected to provide additional information later from the hospital.
