NYPD officers to work 12-hour shifts beginning of July

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch notified uniformed officers they will be working 12-hour shifts starting the week of July 1, citing the "unprecedented demands" of July events, happening under a "heightened threat environment."

Officers will still get their regular days off as a general matter, but previously requested days off may not be granted.

The department notification cites department resources being dedicated to secure the World Cup, the NBA Finals, America 250, Sail250 and July 4.

"Each of these will bring large crowds, complex operations, and significant demands on this department. All of this is happening in a heightened threat environment," Tisch said in the note to the department.

She says additional dates may be added closer to the World Cup finals in the middle of July.
