Swastikas found in Queens in multiple places

REGO PARK, Queens (WABC) -- Police are searching for whoever is responsible for a string of antisemitic graffiti throughout the 112th Precinct in Queens on Monday morning.

Authorities say swastikas were spray-painted at five locations, including a Jewish community center, two homes and a vehicle and a synagogue.

"The swastika actually lands right over a plaque dedicated to Jews murdered in Germany because they were Jewish," said Rabbi Yosef Mendelson with Congregation Machane Chodosh.

Mendelson said he wasn't surprised there were five locations vandalized, but this time it hit close to home.

"Especially because our synagogue was built by refugees from Germany," he said.

Video given to Eyewitness News from the Shmira Public Safety shows that there appears to be multiple people going up to one of the residential locations and vandalizing it.

"I'm the child of survivors, people who were rescuers, none of my grandparents survived, they were all killed at Auschwitz," said Suzanne Israel Tufts. "So was an aunt and uncle, many cousins, some were babies in arms. So when I see that, it makes me very angry."

Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted on social media saying in part:

"This is not just vandalism - it is a deliberate act of antisemitic hatred meant to instill fear. There is no place for antisemitism in Queens or anywhere in our city. I stand in solidarity with our Jewish neighbors."

The mayor went on to say he is confident the perpetrators will be held accountable.

And if they are found, Rabbi Mendelson would like to educate those responsible about the Jewish faith.

"I'd love to have a cup of coffee with you and sit down and talk about what it is that we stand for," Mendelson said.

New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin said authorities are searching for at least four individuals responsible for the incidents.

No arrests have been made at this time and the Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating.
