MANHATTAN (WABC) -- Former New York Mets infielder and recording artist José "Candelita" Iglesias has added another milestone to his résumé, making his Broadway debut in the musical Buena Vista Social Club.

Iglesias took the stage Wednesday night as The Narrator in the six-time Tony Award-winning production, becoming the first Latino Major League Baseball player to debut in a Broadway musical.

The appearance marks the latest crossover moment for Iglesias, who has built a following beyond baseball through his music career. His song "OMG" became a breakout hit during the Mets' 2024 playoff run, turning into an anthem for fans at Citi Field and racking up millions of streams and views across digital platforms.

Inspired by true events, Buena Vista Social Club is based on the Grammy Award-winning 1997 album of the same name and tells the story of the legendary Cuban musicians who helped define the sound of Havana. The production features an Afro-Cuban band performing the music live alongside a cast that brings the celebrated story to life.

The musical is currently playing at the Schoenfeld Theatre in Midtown Manhattan.
