Prosecutors also say he was angry about not having any New Year's Eve plans.

LOS ANGELES -- Disturbing new details have emerged about the man accused of setting the Jan. 1 fire that authorities say ultimately set off the deadly Palisades firestorm.
In a trial memorandum, federal prosecutors say 30-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht was distraught over a relationship with a former co-worker and angry about not having any New Year's Eve plans.
Several Uber passengers Rinderknecht drove that night described him as angry, driving erratically and ranting about being mad at the world.
According to the memorandum, prosecutors say Rinderknecht was fixated on Luigi Mangione, the man accused of the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and obsessed with fire.
Rinderknecht's trial is expected to begin June 8. Prosecutors anticipate calling as many as 50 witnesses and estimate the proceedings could take up to 10 days.
In November 2025, a judge ruled Rinderknecht must remain jailed while he awaits trial.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Rozella A. Oliver denied bond to Rinderknecht, saying he must be kept in custody due to his mental health and distress he caused his sister and her family.
Rinderknecht's father testified in support of his release, denying that his son had mental health issues.
If convicted on all charges, Rinderknecht faces up to 45 years in federal prison.
