Police arrest suspect in Queens livery cab carjacking, stabbing

ELMHURST, N.Y. (WABC) -- Police have arrested the suspect in an attack on a livery cab driver in Queens.

Investigators said 41-year-old Kenneth Suden stole Fernando Crispin's car after stabbing him several times early on the morning of Sept. 25.

Police have been looking for Suden for a week. He was recognized by employees when he walked into New York Hospital Queens on Monday. They notified police.

Suden has been charged with attempted murder, robbery, felony assault, grand larceny and robbery, along with a weapon charge. He is being held in Ridgewood.

According to police, Suden was a fare, but after Crispin reached the destination, the tow argued and Suden attacked Crispin, then took the the car.

Crispin is now in serious condition at Elmhurst Hospital. His co-workers are doing everything they can to help support his family while he recovers.

"Family is devastated," Federation of Taxi Drivers spokesman Fernando Mateo said. "His mother, his father, his girlfriend and his brother are here in the hospital. They're by his side. And he is just lucky to be alive. He said to me, 'I don't know how I made it.'"

The 30-year-old Crispin, from San Salvador, was stabbed seven times. "The guy asked him for his money," Mateo said. "He said, 'I don't have money.' He then stabbed him."

"He thought he was going to slice his head off," Mateo said.

Crispin's coworkers and colleagues are now doing everything they can for his family.

"This guy work all the time...He work to bring food to the table," driver Juan Ceballos said. "We're driving day and night. Dangerous. We take care of our families. Who is going to take care of us?"

A Good Samaritan stopped and called 911, and a reward of $1,000 is being offered to that unidentified person for doing the right thing. The victim suffered a perforated liver and heart, and his hand, thighs and legs were all cut. He lay on 70th Avenue Thursday morning yelling
"help" to cars driving by before emergency personnel arrived.

Cops located the victim's car in just a few hours, parked illegally near the crime scene in Ridgewood. Police issued a parking ticket on his car.

"It's ironic that the agent didn't notice that the inside of the vehicle was totally ... full of blood," said Fernando Mateo, New York Taxi Drivers Federation.

Federation representatives met with the NYPD late Friday. Police said the windows were tinted making the blood impossible to see.
