NYPD officer fires at man with butcher's knife in Lower East Side confrontation

LOWER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Officers shot a man who charged at an NYPD officer with a butcher's knife on the Lower East Side, police sources say.

It happened at 126 Ludlow Street around 4 p.m. Sunday. Officers responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call about a person armed with a weapon.

Police say when they arrived there was blood on the stairs and a man approaching them with a butcher's knife. Authorities report officers told him multiple times to show his hands -- then shots were fired and a taser.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

According to one neighbor, a son with mental illness may have attacked and stabbed his elderly father. That same son later, shot by the police.

The investigation is ongoing.
