Upper East Side street renamed for NYPD Officer John Perry, killed on 9/11
UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- A promise was fulfilled on Saturday to never forget a hero of September 11th.
The intersection of Madison Avenue and 101st Street was renamed for NYPD Officer John William Perry.
Perry's brother and sister revealed the new sign.
Perry was the last of the 23 police officers discovered to have died in the attacks. That is because he worked in the Bronx and it was his day off.
Perry showed up at police headquarters and then darted ahead of a group that had assembled there.
"I said, 'my brother, he's gonna be there. I know John. If there's something serious happening, he's gonna be there,'" said his sister, Janice Perry Montoya.
"It's the greatest pain I ever experienced in my life and people ask me 25 years later what it's like. It's the same. The pain is still there. I broke down the other day," added his brother, Joel Perry.
Officer Perry was also a lawyer.
The street bearing his name is near Central Park because he often ran there.
