'Come back.' Long Island woman among missing after devastating Nepal-Tibet border floods
ROSLYN HEIGHTS, Long Island (WABC) -- A Long Island family is searching for answers after a Roslyn Heights woman disappeared during catastrophic flooding near the Nepal-Tibet border.
Amita Amin is among thousands reported missing after floodwaters tore through villages and valleys this week, destroying roads, bridges and power infrastructure. Her husband, Mahendra Amin, and son, Dr. Dhruv Amin, say they have not heard from her since she was traveling with a tour group and attempting to cross from Nepal into Tibet.
Dhruv Amin said the last known location of his mother was a building that was later struck by the devastating flood.
Amita Amin, 67, was on her seventh pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, a sacred mountain in Tibet. Her son said he had accompanied her on previous trips and that the family believed the most difficult part of the journey was behind her when they last spoke.
The family says Amin was traveling with Dhruv Amin's mother-in-law, Tejal Vyomesh Patel, and family friend Jitendra Manubhai Patel. According to her husband, they have lost contact with all members of the group.
"The biggest hurdle I have is that there is no contact with her," Mahendra Amin said.
The flooding struck Wednesday, triggering a massive search and rescue operation. Authorities report hundreds of deaths and more than 2,000 people missing. The death toll continues to climb, with 543 bodies recovered so far.
As rescue crews continue searching the disaster zone, the Amin family is holding onto hope that Amita will be found alive.
"If you're watching me, I miss you. Come back. Everybody is waiting for you," her husband said.
