EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- International Women's Day was celebrated at the United Nations on Monday morning.
This year's theme was "Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls" and our own Sade Baderinwa moderated an event.
One of the first speakers was Pakistani shooting survivor and now activist Malala Yousafzai who spoke out against the Taliban.
"We must call the regime in Afghanistan by its true name -- gender apartheid -- and we must explicitly recognize it as a crime under international law," Yousafzai said.
It all kicks off the U.N.'s 10-day session of the Commission on the Status of Women.
According to the U.N., women have only 64% of the legal rights that men hold worldwide.
The mission is to break down barriers and close legal gaps between genders.
