Movie Review: 'While We're Young'

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The generation gap has been fodder for many films, but now a new movie tacking the topic is set in Brooklyn.

The people portrayed as "older" are pretty young. unless you consider Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts over the hill.

Also appearing in "While We Were Young" is Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul and Mary, who knows something about generation gaps.

Stiller recently announced he'd be directing a sequel to the hit comedy "Zoolander" 15 years after the first movie made people laugh, and Owen Wilson will be returning to co- star. But for now, the focus is on the release of the much smaller, low budget movie.

"While We Were Young" is a tale of Brooklyn told through the eyes of a couple from Cobble Hill who befriend a younger couple from Bushwick portrayed by Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried.

The dry comedy looks at the gap and the challenges of getting older while trying to stay relevant.

"I think you start to take things for granted a lot less, at least I feel that as life experience happens," Stiller said. "So yeah, it's something I could identify with, for sure."

Stiller's dad, the famous Jerry Stiller, grew up in Williamsburg, while the film's director, Noah Baumbach, is from Park Slope. He saw change come to Brooklyn and wanted to make a personal film about his native borough.

"For me, it's great to shoot in the city because it gives me ideas," Baumbach said.

His budget was small by Hollywood standards.

"When you're making it on a smaller scale, first of all, everybody is there because they want to be there," Stiller said. "There's an intensity to it because the less money you have, the less time you have."

"There's more room to create, and there's a lot less pressure from the studios," Seyfried added.

The film was written by Baumbach specifically for Stiller. The two also made "Greenberg" together.

"While We Were Young" opens on March 27.
