NJ mom of 6 fighting cancer gets special home makeover

NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- A mother of six from New Jersey who is battling breast cancer just received a special and much-needed gift.

The Love House Foundation gave her a fresh space and peace of mind after giving three rooms in her home a complete makeover -- turning her home into a sanctuary where she can truly rest and heal.

Breast cancer is a diagnosis no one ever expects to hear. Jordana Irvine, a nurse and single mom, was just 36 years old when she was first diagnosed in 2017.

"And then in 2021, he found that a cancer has spread to my liver and bones," Irvine said.

Irvine said she has lost a lot of herself due to being so tired and always being in and out of the hospital.

"Housework was getting neglected, the kids' bedroom was a mess, I just didn't have the strength, energy," she said.

That's where Love House Foundation came in with their mission:

"To create healing sanctuaries within their home for families that are going through cancer," said Diana Mui.

Two friends who met in the second grade on the Lower East Side grew up to be an interior designer and makers by trade -- but for them, this is personal.

"I was diagnosed with cancer, through that journey, I really wanted to take interior design and turn it into medicine," Mui said.

And Vanessa Lee lost a loved one to cancer.

"I lost my dad to lung cancer and hearing her being diagnosed with it was heartbreaking. So we said, OK, you know, I wanna help you with this," Lee said.

Two years after the initial idea, Love House has done nine room makeovers and counting.

"She really talks to clients and gets the dimension she needs, their favorite color, it's like what makes them happy," Lee said.

Irvine said the makeover has given her comfort and a place to relax when she comes home from chemo.

Mui said the process has helped her see what she can do with interior design and they get to build love.

"Seeing people happy, and they're going through so much, this is their space, but we get to create a home for them," Mui said.
