18-year-old woman shot in chest during purse-snatching on subway platform speaks out
CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Police are searching for a suspect after an 18-year-old woman was shot in the chest Sunday night during an apparent robbery on a subway platform in Brooklyn.
The victim was shot on the downtown No. 2 train subway platform at the President Street - Medgar Evers College Station at around 11:45 p.m.
The woman exclusively spoke to Eyewitness News over the phone about the incident.
"Are you mad? How do you feel today?" Darla Miles asked.
"I feel a little better. I'm just getting used to everything. And the pain. It just wasn't clicking in my head. The scenario like what was going on until afterwards," the victim said.
The incident happened while the woman was on her way home from work.
"He wanted my necklaces first, and I had told them they were fake. He started to grab my bag, my purse, and he kept on telling me to give me my purse I gave him my purse and I listened to him. And then we started pulling over the bag," she said.
They tussled over her square Steve Madden purse for about two minutes before he pressed a gun against her chest and shot her.
"I thought he was going to stop, but I was just, like, not in the right headspace at the time because I didn't think that it was actually happening to me," she said.
The victim miraculously walked away with a flesh wound as the bullet went through her chest and out her upper back.
"I was surprised that it was minimal damage. I did think it was going to be worse only because of where the spot was," the victim said.
She fell to the ground and the suspect ran off.
The victim did not need surgery and has been released from the hospital and is resting at home.
One bullet fragment was recovered at the scene.
The suspect fled on foot. He was wearing a red Yankees hat with a white logo, black shorts, black sneakers, a black face mask and a backpack.
Police were able to track her cellphone to another location on Pacific Street, and when they got there, they found a few of her items that were stolen during the robbery.
