Non-tenured faculty members and NYU reach deal to end strike
NEW YORK (WABC) -- The union representing non-tenured faculty at NYU says they have reached a tentative agreement with the university.
CFU-UAW instructed its members to report to work Wednesday.
Negotiations had been ongoing since the approximately 950 faculty members walked off the job at 11 a.m. Monday.
The tentative agreement was reached at around 2 a.m. Wednesday, prompting the union to pause the strike.
Wiley Norvell, Chief Communications Officer, NYU released a statement saying:
"We are pleased to share that NYU and its unionized contract faculty represented by CFU-UAW have reached a tentative agreement, which will now go to the union's members for a ratification vote. Striking faculty are returning to work today.
"The University has worked in good faith to recognize the important contributions these faculty members make to our community, and to ensure a sustainable and fair agreement. This deal provides meaningful raises and comprehensive benefits that will improve the lives of every member.
"We look forward to coming together as a community to fulfill our shared commitment to our students. We are grateful to both bargaining teams for their significant efforts to reach an agreement. We also appreciate the constructive role played by the Mayor's Office with both parties during negotiations."
The union membership still needs to ratify the agreement.
Non-tenured faculty would receive:
- $91,000 base salary at the assistant rank for this coming academic year
- $100,100 for associate rank
- $110,100 for full rank
- One-time increases above these minimums based on employee longevity
- Additional raises over the first two years of the contract
- 3.5% annual raises starting in 2027
- A new $1 million family care benefit fund
- The package also includes a minimum of $2,500 annual professional development funding for each unionized full-time contract faculty member, professional development leaves, and comprehensive health and welfare benefits identical to those currently offered to all full-time faculty and administrators.
