NEW YORK (WABC) -- It was a violent night in New York City, with several boroughs burdened by gunfire in the middle of the night. There were six shootings in six hours -- two of them deadly.
In the backdrop of the bloody weekend, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch touted a sharp drop in gun violence in the month of July.
At St. Barnabas Hospital, three victims from one of the Saturday into Sunday overnight shootings are recovering. Two women ages 22 and 32 were taken there by ambulance. The third victim is a 37-year-old man who got himself there. They are all expected to survive.
Two other victims in Brooklyn did not survive.
A 911 call about an assault on Crotona Parkway near East Tremont Avenue led police to two women who had been shot -- one in the arm, the other in the back.
A man who was shot in the arm appeared later at the hospital. Police were seen chasing someone at the scene and taking them into custody, but no one is charged yet.
It was part of a violent night of gunfire in three boroughs that sent eight people to the hospital. Two of them didn't make it.
Less than an hour after the triple shooting in the Bronx, a man and woman were shot on Bushwick Avenue in Brooklyn, also with non-life threatening injuries. A 35 year old woman and a man in his 20s, who sources say is being uncooperative with the investigation.
Around the same time on East 52nd street in East Flatbush, around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, police say a 59-year-old man was shot in the chest and left in critical condition. A 35-year-old man was shot in the arm. They're also expected to recover.
Around 2:30 a.m. in Cypress Hills, more shots were fired and this time it was deadly. A 23--year-old man was shot and killed on Pine Street. He hasn't been identified yet. The motive of the shooting is unknown.
The overnight violence also shattered the peace on the boardwalk in Far Rockaway, where a 30-year-old woman was shot and wounded at Beach 17th Street. She is in stable condition.
The violent night occurred a few days after the mayor pointed to the drop of more than 20 percent in shootings and homicides this summer.
"Public safety is about more than just crime stats, it's about how people are feeling," said Mayor Adams.
Meanwhile police have identified the victim of a deadly shooting in Sunset Park at around 9 last night as 45 year old Roberto Cuevas. He was shot after an argument on 57th street and 4th Avenue.
It's not clear if any of the survivors of the overnight violence were innocent bystanders.
Investigations are just getting started to determine what went down and who is responsible.
