Woman shot amid apparent ongoing neighbor dispute in Brooklyn

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) -- An ongoing feud between neighbors appears to be what led to a shooting in Brooklyn on Tuesday morning.

Police say a man shot his upstairs neighbor, and tenants say the victim had complained about being harassed by the suspect in the past.

It happened on Saint John's Place in Prospect Heights around 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday.

The 49-year-old woman had been complaining to the building's super about being harassed by the man, other neighbors told Eyewitness News. Sources say the suspect was upset about hearing footsteps and other noise from upstairs.

The downstairs neighbor confronted the woman in the hallway Tuesday morning, and struck her repeatedly with the barrel of a gun.

When the superintendent rushed to her aid, he allegedly threatened him with the gun.

The suspect then allegedly shot the woman in the arm and leg. She was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and was said to be stable.

"There was just a bunch of yelling and screaming at the beginning, two or three seconds, then a gunshot, and then I wasn't even sure if it was a gunshot, it was not that loud, a bunch of more screaming," a witness said. "And then I poked my head out, and I heard the super say there was a gun go inside, so I went inside. I dressed myself, and then I went outside immediately on the street."

When police arrived, they initially thought the suspect was barricaded in his apartment, but after they entered, he was nowhere to be found.

The gunman is described as about 5 foot 10 inches tall, 155 pounds, and was last seen wearing a navy blue shirt and navy blue pants.

It is believed the gunman may have escaped down a back fire escape.
