NEW YORK (WABC) -- Two nights after scoring his 20th goal of the season, New York Ranger Rick Nash traded in his jersey for an apron as he helped serve a holiday dinner at the Life Center homeless shelter on Thursday.

Nash joined members of the Garden of Dreams Foundation staff as they served food and spread holiday cheer to over 300 people with Christmas now one week away.

"It's fun to give back and it's just a little bit of our time," Nash said. "It's really the least we could do and it's fun to see the kids and the smile on their faces."

Life Center is a homeless shelter for children and families that's located on the Lower East Side and works to help families get back up on their feet.

"We play a game, but the stuff that goes on here is real life and it's fun to help out for a night," Nash said.

Since the Garden of Dreams Foundation was started in 2006, they've held hundreds of events to help brighten the lives of children and families through their charitable work. Life Center is one of the many partner organizations that the Garden of Dreams consistently works with.

"It just shows what the Garden of Dreams does," Nash said. "Giving back this time of year, it's pretty special to be part of it."
