Dozens of horses coralled after escaping from New Jersey stable

MOUNTAINSIDE, N.J. (WABC) -- Police managed to corral about 30 horses that got out of a stable in northern New Jersey.

The great escape occurred at Watchung Stable around 8:45 p.m. Monday.

Cellphone video showed the horses galloping along a road before they were captured.

It's not clear how the animals got free.

It was a sight you don't see often, a herd of horses making their way through a neighborhood, stopping cars as they approach and causing quite a stir among residents.

The escapees were just trying to get away from a coyote near the stable.

Local traffic came to a crawl to give the herd the right of way. For the most part they were calm and content, apparently feeling they were safe from the coyote.

At one point the herd stopped to graze at a home on High Point Drive.

One horse suffered a minor injury but is OK. The gate they slipped out of has been repaired. It took police agencies from three towns to corral the herd.
