MASTIC BEACH, N.Y. (WABC) -- Police are investigating after an 11-year-old boy brought an unloaded handgun to school.
According to Suffolk County Police Department, detectives are investigating after a boy brought a gun to Tangier Smith Elementary School on Wednesday.
In a statement from the William Floyd School District, student told a teacher and police were called. The boy was released to his parents.
The William Floyd School District on Wednesday released a statement saying the gun was "discovered at dismissal when a classmate notified school officials, who in turn, immediately notified the Suffolk County Police Department and the student's parents. At no point were students and staff in danger."
The incident is "currently under investigation by the police and appropriate action will be taken by school officials," it said.
The student was charged with juvenile delinquency for bringing a weapon on school grounds.
The boy's father was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and endangering the welfare of a child.
There were no threats to any students.
