An Amtrak train has partially derailed after it crashed into a water truck on the tracks in California.
Amtrak said the train was moving at a slow speed when it had a minor derailment, causing it to make contact with an incoming NJ Transit train.
The Amtrak engineer whose speeding train ran off the rails in Philadelphia last year was apparently distracted by word that a train nearby had been hit by a rock, federal investigators concluded Tuesday, pinning most of the blame on him for the wreck that killed eight people.
The NTSB has concluded that a "distraction" caused the engineer of Amtrak 188 to lose situational awareness prior to last year's deadly derailment in Philadelphia, according to sources.
Robert Hewett was texting his wife, Judy, about vacation plans from his seat in the front car of Amtrak Train 188 on May 12, 2015, headed home from a work trip when the car started to tip.
NTSB investigator Ryan Frigo said videos showed construction equipment on the track and a contractor's equipment on an adjacent track before Sunday morning's crash.
