Sandy Kenyon reviews "The Hundred-Foot Journey"
Sandy Kenyon calls "The Hundred-Foot Journey," starring Helen Mirren, a satisfying alternative to the season's action blockbusters

NEW YORK (WABC) -- What began with 'Spiderman' continues with 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and Friday the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back in theaters.

It's all part of the blockbuster season at the box office, but if you're ready for a break, there's something a little different at the box office.

"The Hundred Foot Journey" is all about great food cooked up by one of my favorite directors Lasse Hallstrom.

It's a trip worth taking and a treat worth tasting - if only as break between blockbusters this summer.

Film as food for the soul comes courtesy of two well-known "chefs:" Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey.

"'The Hundred Foot Journey' is really about the 100 foot divide between cultures," said Winfrey.

The story is about a French restaurant run by Helen Mirren's character, and an Indian family restaurant that opens across the street, Maison Mumbai. A feud between the two proprietors begins in this French village, which may never be the same and it doesn't help when - the sone of the Indian restaurant proprietor cooks for the other restaurant.

Indian actor Om Puri is more compelling here than Mirren, one of Britain's finest who's been hired for all the wrong reasons to play a woman from France. Mirren's name above the title might help sell the souffl, but her high school French soon left me wanting say "au revoir."

But glad I didn't because that would have meant kissing a sweet love story goodbye and missing an interesting tale of how two cultures can be bridged in one kitchen.

Leave yourself plenty of time for a leisurely meal after this one because it will make you hungry. This is part of a summer banquet of films about food. There's been "Chef", and now "Journey" - all very satisfying. The new film is from Disney, which is the company to ABC 7.
