CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A 24-year-old Jewish college student was punched at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, an attack police are investigated as a possible hate crime.

Authorities say an unknown suspect bumped the victim from behind as he chatted with a group of female students following a science exam at around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday night.

The victim, who was wearing a yarmulke, turned around and was reportedly punched twice, in the face and the stomach.

When asked why, the suspect allegedly said, "I don't like white and Jewish. Leave the school, you Jew."

The suspect, who is black, fled through the building's main entrance. Detective are trying to determine if he is affiliated with the college.

The victim declined medical attention. The incident is being investigated as a possible bias attack.

One of the other students, who is Muslim, came to the victim's aid.

"The fact that a Muslim woman came to the defense of an orthodox Jewish man is a true reflection of the values that permeate this great institution," Medgar Evers President Rudy Crew said.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
