Officer wounded during shootout on Long Island

HEMPSTEAD

The incident happened around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Washington Street and Cooper Place in /*Hempstead*/.

Authorities say the incident started when three Hempstead police officers responded to reports of burglaries in the area and confronted two suspects. The suspects ran away, with the officers chasing on foot.

One of the suspects reportedly opened fire at the pursuing officers, hitting the cop in the forearm and in his bullet-resistant vest. The shot officer returned fire, hitting the gunman multiple times in the groin area.

The officer was taken to /*Mercy Medical Center*/ with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect was also injured and taken to /*Nassau Medical Center*/ in unknown condition.

The second suspect is being questioned.
