PATERSON, New Jersey (WABC) -- A homicide investigation is underway in Paterson after a woman was found dead of a gunshot wound along freight train tracks.
Police responded to the area of 27th Street and 19th Avenue just after 3 a.m. on Wednesday.
When officers arrived, they found the unidentified woman with mounds of trash in an area known to be used as a homeless encampment.
The victim had a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead.
An official said she was likely involved in prostitution.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the deadly shooting. So far they have no released any information about a person of interest.
Patricia Pipkin said she has lived in the area for several years and it is usually less impacted by crime than other areas.
She said she was once slammed to the ground by a mugger last year who got away with the less than $40 she was carrying.
She believes there needs to be more police officers in the city.
"They're trying their best but they can't be everywhere," Pipkin said.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office asks anyone with additional information to reach out at 1-877-370-PCPO or tips@passaiccountynj.org or contact the Paterson Police Detective Bureau at 973-321-1120.
