Search in water for missing 14-year-old swimmer

The FDNY and NYPD had divers in the water, but they were eventually removed due to darkness and searched the shore line, but didn't find anything.

A police helicopter was also over the scene assisting in the search, until it was called off for darkness. FDNY officials say Wednesday, the search will become a recovery mission.

The Coast Guard says the missing swimmer was in the water with two other boys.

Those two made it back to shore okay. "He was saying help, help help. And I went into the water to see if I could reach that far…I couldn't reach that far," said a friend.

There were at least three drownings at this same beach last year. Police say the surf is tricky. "You swim out to the sand bar. You're on the sandbar and then you go out a little bit further and you're gone," said FDNY Deputy Chief Michael Halderman.

Lifeguards are on duty at the park until 6 p.m. The 911 call for this missing swimmer came in at 7:12. Officials at the park say they've never had a drowning while lifeguards are on duty.
