Resident shoots burglars who shot his dog

EAST ISLIP

/*Suffolk County*/ police say three men, one armed with a .22 caliber rifle, forcibly entered through a rear door of the home on East Adams St. at 12:19 a.m.

Once inside the home, the armed man shot a dog. That's when police say the resident of the home, armed with a shotgun, confronted the men and shot two of them. The third man fled the scene.

One man, who has yet to be identified, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

The second suspect, Justin Benkov, 25, of Mastic, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he is listed in critical condition.

Benkov will be charged on an active warrant for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 4th Degree.

Police later arrested the man who fled the scene, identified as Philipe Robinette, 27, of Aquebogue.

He is charged with Burglary 1st Degree. He will be arraigned at First District Court in /*Central Islip*/ Thursday.

The dog, a pit bull, is expected to survive, police said.
