Police make arrest in deadly Brooklyn hit and run

NEW YORK

"I heard a bang outside, a car squeaking," said Marion Hutchinson, a witness.

That sound Marion Hutchinson heard was a car slamming into Margaret Myers, a 69-year-old mother of seven, grandmother, and a deeply religious woman who doted over her only great grandchild.

"My heart like, its swelling this big, tears can't represent how I feel," said Ruddy Meyers, the victim's son.

Margaret was walking home from the store last night around 6:30 p.m., her groceries are still scattered all over Wortman Avenue.

As the home health care aid was approaching Barbey Street, she lives a block away, police say a 2000 Mazda hit her, and she was thrown roughly 30 feet.

Videsh Badal, he lives in Coney Island with his parents, was driving that Mazda and took off.

He was allegedly drunk and his license was suspended.

"The penalty for these people who drink and drive should be very harsh," said Andrew Rhooms, the victim's son.

Eyewitness News has learned a witness followed the 34-year-old to Corzine Avenue where police arrested him, right in front of Domino's, where the suspect works.

Sources say he was hired as a delivery guy February 29th, showed up for his shift Wednesday, clocked in, took his first order and left.

Shortly after, investigators say he hit and killed Margaret, who friends say was always busy in her garden.

"She even gave me some lessons on how to plant the onions and I can't believe it, so hard to believe she is not here," a neighbor said.

Her sons say that Margaret was the glue that kept the family together and she had planned on handing out cards from Diabetes Association to neighbors.

The family says they are grateful to the unidentified Good Samaritan who tracked Badal down.

"I thank him, would like to meet him, I appreciate what he has done," Rhooms said.

Badal is charged with vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury, resisting arrest, driving with a suspended license and driving without a license.
