Following Hurricane Sandy, Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef imposed a Local Emergency Order limiting the amount of gasoline or diesel purchased to 10 gallons per vehicle, per day, including portable fuel containers. That local order has now expired.
The order had excluded the wholesale delivery of fuel to gas station retailers, all emergency vehicles and commercial businesses, which were the only exceptions to the order. Vanderhoef made the decision after consulting with emergency officials and law enforcement.
"Faced with a difficult decision during the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Sandy my administration felt it prudent to limit the intake of gasoline to help Rockland get through the fuel crisis that emerged following this horrific storm," said Vanderhoef. "The fuel crisis appears to have turned the corner, as the state and federal governments have been successful in their efforts to restore infrastructure and gas supplies."
