Up Close: Controversy over Bronx police shooting
NEW YORK (WABC) -- There was blistering criticism this week from Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill, who said the 66-year-old victim of a Bronx police shooting should still be alive.
Deborah Danner was shot and killed after police say she swung a bat at an officer Tuesday night.
Police knew she was emotionally disturbed and they had been called to her apartment before.
Sources say Sergeant Hugh Barry fired the two fatal shots. The mayor and the police say Barry didn't follow protocol.
Joining us is Maki Haberfeld, an expert on police training and a professor of police science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
Also, this is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. 1 in 4 women in this countrywill be subjected to domestic violence at least once during her lifetime.
Every year there are 2 million injuries and 1,300 deaths because of domestic violence. That's more than 3 deaths a day.
And just as troubling, more than 15 million children in America live in families where there's been domestic violence in the past year.
Joining us are two women dealing with this issue every day: Judge Judy Kluger, Executive Director of the Sanctuary for Families, and Rose Michel, an advocate for domestic abuse victims and herself a former victim.
Finally, we'll get some insights on the presidential campaign from political analyst Hank Sheinkopf.
