EAST NEW YORK (WABC) -- Two suspects have been taken into custody in the shooting of an off-duty NYPD officer in Brooklyn.

A 22-year-old man was picked up in Rockville Centre. He was matched to a fingerprint on the officer's white Range Rover. He has 24 prior arrests.

A second suspect, believed to be an accomplice who was with him at the time, has also been taken into custody.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.

The 33-year-old officer was wounded Tuesday night in a shooting during an apparent attempted robbery. The officer was shot in the arm and grazed in the torso outside a building on Bradford Street in East New York around 10:30 p.m.

"He's got an injury to his left arm with a graze wound to his chest. Looks like it was an in and out wound to the left forearm and graze to the chest," said NYPD Chief James O'Neill.

Police say the housing officer, identified as Tramaine Oxley, and his two cousins were parked in a white Range Rover on Linden Boulevard after watching a basketball game at nearby Gershwin Park.

Two suspects pulled up in a BMW, jumped out and mugged the victims of their cash, cellphones and other jewelry, authorities said.

The two suspects fled, and Oxley gave chase.

He apparently caught up with one of them on Bradford Street, and a struggle ensued, prompting the suspect to open fire. Oxley was hit, but he continued to chase after them even after the men jumped into their vehicle and began to drive away.

Oxley fired four shots as they drove off. It is unknown if either of the suspects were hit.

"I'm not sure if they specifically looking to confront the people who robbed them, or they were trying to get away. At some point, shots were fired at the Range Rover," said O'Neill.

The officer was then driven to the hospital by his two cousins, who were not injured.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Officer Tramaine Oxley, wishing him a speedy and full recovery," Public Advocate Leticia James said. "Officer Oxley chose to dedicate his life to protecting New Yorkers and a senseless act of gun violence has left him with lasting injuries. In the face of this heinous act, we must stand united as one City and work together to rescue violence in every corner of our city."

Oxley is an eight-year veteran assigned to a housing bureau in East New York. He is currently out on disability.

A large number of police officers responded to search the area for bullet casings and evidence.

Linden Boulevard was closed for much of the morning along with side streets.
