NEW YORK CITY -- The NYPD detective who accidentally shot his partner last month has been fired by Police Commissioner William Bratton.
"Based on the recommendation of the Office of the NYPD Trial Commissioner, Police Commissioner Bratton signed an order of dismissal for Detective Poggi, effective May 23, 2014," a senior NYPD official said.
Det. Jay Poggi, a 31-year veteran assigned to the 75th Precinct, shot his partner in the wrist on April 24. The shooting is believed to have followed a night of drinking at a Rockaways bar, ending in a crash and Poggi charged with driving while intoxicated.
Poggi filed for retirement earlier this month. The NYPD then had 30 days to file administrative charges against him and take the case to a departmental trial.
The trials commissioner recommended to Bratton that Poggi be terminated. Based on that recommendation, Bratton signed an order of dismissal, effective last Friday.
Officials say Poggi refused to submit to a breath-alcohol test following the shooting.
According to court documents, Poggi's blood alcohol level was .113 when the legal limit is .08.
The Internal Affairs investigation into the shooting of the partner continues. He has yet to be interviewed by detectives.
