"Forever" premiers Monday at 10 p.m. on ABC
Sandy Kenyon reviews "Forever," a new TV drama about an immortal medical examiner.

We hope you've cleared your calendar and DVR. It's premiere week here at ABC. Monday night is the premiere of a brand new drama that includes mystery, secret and immortality-- "Forever."

"Forever" is about a guy who just cannot seem to die, and it's bothered him now for a couple of centuries.

Like the old song goes, "Forever is a long, long time," and nobody knows the truth of that better than Dr. Henry Morgan who helps the N.Y.P.D. solve cases so that he can better understand why he is immortal.

Dr. Morgan has to solve a crime every week but his immortality remains.

Every time he dies, the good Dr. Morgan comes back to life - usually in a body of water - such as the East River.

Dr. Morgan looks to be in his mid-thirties, but he's actually 200-years-old, and only one person knows his secret.

Judd Hirsch is a perfect fit for this series shot entirely in the city where he grew up.

"From the Bronx I graduated to Brooklyn," Hirsch says. "From Brooklyn, I graduated to Queens. From Queens, I graduated to Manhattan."

Now he's back in Brooklyn where we found him and Ioan Gruffudd in the Greenpoint section in between days on location.

New York itself is probably character number two or even number one in equal parts with Dr. Henry Morgan, says Hirsch.

And the Welsh star who plays him thinks "Forever's" time has come.

"If you look at the landscape of television," Gruffudd says, "we've gone very deep into reality and possibly blood and guts and gore and (the reality of being a drug dealer or a vampire). I think our show is unabashedly romantic."

There's romance, mystery - so many elements to this show. It's hard to explain "Forever" in just the short time we have. The full set-up comes Monday night in the first episode and then the series moves into its regular time slot Tuesday night."

Catch the first episode of "Forever" on ABC on Monday at 10 p.m., followed by the second episode Tuesday at 10 p.m.
