UNION CITY, New Jersey (WABC) -- It was back to school Friday morning for students and some nervous parents as a New Jersey elementary school one day after that school was put on lockdown when an intruder was discovered inside.
A day after an intruder made his way into the building, security was the main lesson today at George Washington elementary school in Union City.
Several police officers, school officials and a superintendent spent the morning greeting students outside and distributing fliers asking for help finding the man that sneaked into the school Thursday morning.
"The police are doing an ongoing investigation and working with a number of authorities to try to be sure that we can be sure that this doesn't happen again," said the school superintendent.
Surveillance cameras caught these images of the man inside the building where staff members found him rummaging through a secretary's desk in the basement about 8:00 a.m.
He managed to escape through a side door.
The suspect who may have posed as a substitute teacher has not been caught. Authorities believe the same guy also made his way into Daniel Webster elementary school in Weehawken later in the day.
The incident sparked lock downs at both schools and had parents on edge.
Investigators released these photos of the suspect carrying a back pack as he was walking through a basement area of the school:
