A man was arrested after he was shot by police during a standoff in New Jersey late Friday night.

The Wayne Police Department was called to a residence on Redwood Avenue, where they found Francisco Pacheco holding his mother at knifepoint outside the home near the doorway.

According to a statement from Michael J. DeMarco, chief assistant prosecutor in Passaic County, police told Pacheco to release his mother and negotiated with him for more than 90 minutes. When Pacheco tried to drag his mother inside the residence, police told him to drop the knife.

The statement said that when Pacheco ignored the commands, an officer fired and hit Pacheco once. He released his mother and Pacheco was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where he is in stable condition. His mother also was taken to St. Joseph's with injuries and is in stable condition.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office investigated. Pacheco was charged with several counts, including second and third degree aggravated assault, weapons charges, and resisting arrest. His bail has been set at $125,000.
