NEW YORK (WABC) -- NFL legend Joe Namath is lending his support to helping football players deal with a growing concern: serious head injuries.
The former Jets quarterback is trying to help find new methods of treatment.
Namath is lending his name to a treatment center in Jupiter, Florida, where he has lived for the past 22 years.
It will focus on treatment and prevention of traumatic head injuries.
Namath says that he himself has been undergoing a new treatment for what he calls the brain trauma he believes he suffered while playing in the NFL.
The hyperbaric oxygen therapy will be at the center of a just announced clinical trial that will focus on treating brain injuries, an effort Namath says he passionately supports.
"My suffering has come from losing some friends, has come from watching some guys deteriorate over the years, guys that have had traumatic brain injuries, teammates of mine," said Namath.
"The immediate goal of our trial is to enroll 100 patients and to get them through with the hopes that hyperbaric oxygen treatment will someday become a standard of care for traumatic brain injury," said Dr. Barry Miskin of the Joe Namath Center.
