NEW YORK (WABC) -- After another bitterly cold night, conditions begin to improve on Monday.

Temperatures continue to moderate through the week, reaching the mid-30s by Tuesday and possibly the first 40s since January 22nd on Wednesday before we're back below average later in the week.

Watch for rain or snow showers in a few spots late Tuesday, and then we'll need to monitor a storm that may arrive late next weekend.

NYC trash collection delayed because of weather

Some parts of the city are seeing delays in trash pickup because the same sanitation workers who collect trash are also working on clearing the snow.

Lauren Glassberg has more on the trash removal efforts after the winter storm.

DSNY released the following statement:

"Given that the same Sanitation Workers who pick up trash have been clearing the foot of snow and ice that fell last Sunday, we are about one day behind on trash collection, and we ask for patience from New Yorkers while we catch up.

We are prioritizing trash and compost - the stuff that can smell - over recyclables, but we are picking up all streams, all across the city, just on a slight delay. Most New Yorkers will recall that this is standard practice during and after winter weather events; years ago, trash collection would have been outright paused for weeks after a storm like this, but today we are able to do some of both at the same time.

This is a 24/7 operation, as is snow removal. We are running hundreds of collection trucks on every shift, 12 hours at a time until we are fully caught up. Thousands of people are working to get this done as quickly as possible."

1,750 households without power as Brooklyn outage continues

Power problems began late Friday night for residents in Boreum Hill and neighboring Park Slope, leaving over a thousand customers dealing with flickering lights, partial outages, and disrupted routines through the weekend.

Currently, 1,750 households are without stable power -- this in the middle of historic low temperatures.

Chantee Lans reports from Brooklyn on the power outages.

Con Edison says crews will remain in the area as long as it takes to restore full service.

For residents needing warmth or assistance, PS 133 on Fourth Avenue is open as a warming center.
