MTA prepares for extreme cold
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it is taking proactive steps to keep riders safe and maintain service across subways, buses, bridges, and railroads.
The MTA is closely monitoring conditions and deploying extra personnel systemwide to respond quickly to any weather-related issues during the deep freeze.
Bridges and Tunnels
MTA Bridges and Tunnels will implement a ban on empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks beginning Saturday, Feb. 7, at 2:00 p.m. The ban is expected to be in place until approximately 11:00 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7.
Pedestrian walkways at the Cross Bay Bridge, Marine Parkway Bridge, Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, and the Henry Hudson Bridge will remain open, but may close depending on wind conditions.
NYC Transit
NYC Transit has additional staff on duty throughout the weekend to monitor real-time conditions and respond to operational challenges as they arise. Extra subway crews are being deployed to key locations to quickly address weather-related issues and keep trains moving safely.
Additional depot and road operations personnel are on hand to minimize disruptions to bus service and equipment issues. Bus operators have been instructed to reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and fully clear snow, ice, and frost from windshields, mirrors, and lights before operating a vehicle.
Customers are encouraged to check the MTA app or mta.info for the latest service information and updates.
Access-A-Ride is operating on a normal schedule. All providers have been reminded to follow the Severe Weather Plan, which includes advising drivers to remain vigilant and look for passengers sheltering in doorways or other sheltered locations before declaring a No-Show during extreme weather conditions.
Long Island Rail Road
The Long Island Rail Road has added personnel to monitor the impact of extreme cold on tracks and key switching locations and to make adjustments or repairs as needed. Station waiting rooms remain open continuously from their normal opening time on Monday morning through their regular closing time on Tuesday evening.
Metro-North Railroad
Metro-North is conducting cold-weather track patrols and has increased Power Department and Communications and Signal staffing to inspect, maintain, and repair any weather- or temperature-related impacts as needed. Overpasses and platforms equipped with push-for-heat capabilities remain open during the overnight hours from Monday into Tuesday.
