NEW YORK (WABC) -- Zohran Mamdani has been elected mayor of New York City, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
With the victory, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city's first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become the city's youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill has been elected governor of New Jersey.
The four-term member of Congress centered her campaign on her biography as a Navy helicopter pilot and former prosecutor who would stand up to President Donald Trump.
She will be New Jersey's second female governor.
Ciattarelli lost his second straight governor's election after coming within a few points of defeating Gov. Phil Murphy four years ago.
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo votes in NYC mayoral election
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo voted just after 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
He cast his ballot in the NYC mayoral election at the High School of Art & Design on East 56 Street on the East Side of Manhattan.
He was alongside two of his daughters for the moment.
He gave voters and reporters a thumbs up as he left.
Cuomo spoke afterwards saying, "Doing it as a family is special. I did it with my father for many campaigns, a lot of good memories, a lot of good memories, and it's nice to carry on that legacy."
The former governor voted on the East Side with two of his daughters.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill cast her ballot Monday morning at Hillside Elementary School in Montclair, New Jersey.
She was accompanied by her husband and two of her children.

After voting, Sherrill spoke to the press about bomb threats potentially suppressing votes.
Multiple polling places temporarily closed Tuesday morning in northern New Jersey after precincts fielded emailed bomb threats later deemed to be not credible, prompting election officials to direct some voters to other polling places.
During the press conference, Sherrill reiterated her agenda on affordability for all New Jersey residents and how she plans to lead the state if she becomes governor.

Sliwa with wife as she casts vote for NYC mayor on Upper West Side
Republican Candidate Curtis Sliwa accompanied his wife, Nancy, as she voted in the New York City mayoral election.
Curtis Sliwa already voted in the election during early voting.
The pair cast their vote at a polling location on West 72nd Street between Broadway and West End avenues.
Afterwards, he talked about his hopes to become the next mayor while promoting his book about cats.

Candidate Zohran Mamdani casts his vote in NYC mayoral election
Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani cast his vote alongside his wife in the New York City Mayoral election on Tuesday morning.
He went to a polling location at Frank Sinatra High School on 35th Avenue in Astoria, Queens around 8 a.m.
Mamdani spoke to his supporters a few blocks away afterwards.
