NEW YORK (WABC) -- Zohran Mamdani has been elected mayor of New York City, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

With the victory, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city's first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become the city's youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill has been elected governor of New Jersey.

The four-term member of Congress centered her campaign on her biography as a Navy helicopter pilot and former prosecutor who would stand up to President Donald Trump.

She will be New Jersey's second female governor.

Ciattarelli lost his second straight governor's election after coming within a few points of defeating Gov. Phil Murphy four years ago.

Judge orders 3 Passaic County schools to remain open for voting due to bomb threat

A Passaic County judge has ordered three Passaic County schools - two in Paterson and one in Passaic - to remain open for voting until 9 p.m. because of the bomb threat Tuesday morning.

The judge said the fair thing to do is to give residents in the wards an extended opportunity to vote. Anyone standing in line at 9 p.m. will be permitted to cast their ballot.

Both School No. 2 and School No. 10 in Paterson were evacuated as part of the bomb threats. They were later deemed safe.

The results of the Virginia gubernatorial election -- which comes during an election off-year -- is often viewed as a political bellwether for competitive races in the midterms the following year.
