NEW YORK (WABC) -- Zohran Mamdani has been elected mayor of New York City, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

With the victory, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city's first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become the city's youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill has been elected governor of New Jersey.

The four-term member of Congress centered her campaign on her biography as a Navy helicopter pilot and former prosecutor who would stand up to President Donald Trump.

She will be New Jersey's second female governor.

Ciattarelli lost his second straight governor's election after coming within a few points of defeating Gov. Phil Murphy four years ago.

Mamdani appoints transition team

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced his transition committee on Wednesday morning.

The transition team will be directed by Elana Leopold, from the de Blasio administration.

The co-chairs are former Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer and the progressive former Biden administration Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan.

Along with Torres-Springer, another former deputy mayor, Melanie Hartzog, will be a co-chair as well as Grace Bonilla of United Way of NYC.

"Today we begin the work of building a new administration - and I'm proud to announce an experienced transition leadership team that will hit the ground running," said Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. "From day one, our campaign was laser-focused on making this city affordable for working people. And on day one of my administration, with this talented transition team in place, we will be ready to make that vision a reality. Our transition leaders will help build a City Hall committed to excellence, integrity and a hunger to solve old problems with new solutions. Together, we will show the nation how government can deliver when we put the people, not billionaires, first."

Zohran Mamdani's rise: From Queens lawmaker to New York City mayor

When he announced his run for mayor last October, Zohran Mamdani was a state lawmaker unknown to most New York City residents.

But that was before the 34-year-old democratic socialist crashed the national political scene with a stunning upset over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in June's Democratic primary.

On Tuesday, Mamdani completed his political ascension, again vanquishing Cuomo, as well as Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, in the general election.

The former foreclosure prevention counselor and one-time rapper becomes the city's first Muslim mayor, first born in Africa, and first of South Asian heritage - not to mention its youngest mayor in more than a century.

Voters gave Mamdani 'mandate' to pursue agenda, New York City mayor-elect says on GMA

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani told "Good Morning America" on Wednesday that he would not be "intimidated" by potential threats from President Donald Trump to deploy the National Guard to the city.

"His threats are inevitable," Mamdani said. "This has nothing to do a safety, it has to do with intimidation."

"If it was safety, President Trump would be threatening to deploy the National Guard to the top 10 states of crime, eight out of which are all Republican-led," Mamdani added. "But because of that party he won't actually be doing it."

NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani appeared Wednesday on "Good Morning America."

The 34-year-old democratic socialist was propelled to victory amid a record turnout in New York City. More than 2 million voters turned out on Tuesday -- the first time a mayoral election crossed that threshold since 1969.

Mamdani will become the city's youngest mayor since 1892 and the first Muslim to hold the office.
