Alex Pretti, 37, was shot and killed on Jan. 24 in Minneapolis -- the second shooting of a U.S. citizen last month by federal agents in the city.

The shooting of Pretti, an ICU nurse, ratcheted up tensions, as protesters clashed in the streets with law enforcement in the aftermath of the shooting.

The incident followed the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, on Jan. 7.

Feds to 'draw down' 700 agents in Minnesota

Border Czar Tom Homan said Wednesday the federal government will "draw down" 700 agents in the Minnesota area "effective immediately."

He also said that CBP and ICE agents in Minnesota are aligned.

Homan to speak in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning

The White House's border czar, Tom Homan, is scheduled to hold a press conference on Wednesday morning in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Homan is expected to speak at 8 a.m. CT, according to the White House.

The border czar was dispatched early last week to Minnesota to attempt to find a solution to the tensions that have roiled the state in the wake of two fatal shootings involving federal agents.

White House border czar Tom Homan holds a news conference at the Bishop Whipple Federal building on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026 in Minneapolis.

Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection have been carrying out Operation Metro Surge in the state.

Homan said last Thursday that "massive changes" were expected, saying he had reached agreements with local and state officials that would eventually "draw down" the number of federal agents in the city.

"We will conduct targeted enforcement operations -- targeted; what we've done for decades," Homan said last week. "When we hit the streets, we know exactly who we're looking for, have a good idea of where we may find them."

'Deep distress': Renee Good's brothers testify on Capitol Hill after deadly Minneapolis shooting

The two brothers of Renee Good, the 37-year-old Minneapolis woman killed by a federal immigration officer in January, spoke on Capitol Hill Tuesday, telling lawmakers of the effect their sister's death had on their family.

Renee Good's brothers Luke Ganger and Brent Ganger, and an attorney representing the family, spoke at a forum on federal agents' use of force in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.

"The deep distress our family feels because of Renee's loss in such a violent and unnecessary way is complicated by feelings of disbelief, distress and desperation for change," said one brother, Luke Ganger.

Luke and Brent Ganger's remarks were part of a special public forum organized by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Rep. Robert Garcia of D-Calif., as part of an inquiry into the tactics and use of force by Department of Homeland Security agents.

Every Homeland Security officer in Minneapolis is now being issued a body-worn camera, Noem says

Every Homeland Security officer on the ground, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, will be immediately issued body-worn cameras, Secretary Kristi Noem said Monday.

Every Homeland Security officer on the ground, including ICE officers, will be immediately issued body-worn cameras, Secretary Noem said Monday.

Noem made the announcement on the social media platform X. She said the body-worn camera program is being expanded nationwide as funding becomes available.

"We will rapidly acquire and deploy body cameras to DHS law enforcement across the country," Noem said in the social media post.

The news of the body cameras comes as Minneapolis has been the site of intense scrutiny over the conduct of immigration enforcement agents. There have been increased calls by critics of Homeland Security to require all of the department's officers who are responsible for immigration enforcement to wear body cameras.

President Joe Biden ordered in 2022 that federal law enforcement officers wear body cameras as part of an executive order that included other policing reform measures. President Donald Trump had rescinded that directive after starting his second term.
